Just like babies, puppies also learn during play. When puppies are just born and are However, once they grow, exercising becomes very important and should be performed on a daily basis.
Exercising your puppy helps in building a strong bond between you and your puppy. Given below are a few bonding exercises you should perform with your puppy:
1. Sit on the floor with treats and begin to gently treat your puppy while handling them (paws, petting, tail, belly, etc… ( of course this assumes that your puppy has no aggression problems)).
The key concept here is to treat your puppy with a constant flow of treats while doing this in the beginning; we really want to instill a good association with you touching her/him. This will help you if he or she ever suffers from any infection or small lumps, ticks, cuts, and so on by letting you notice them at an early stage to treat them as soon as possible.
2. As many of you know Dedicated Dog Training constantly touts the “spillover” effect from dog training, the spillover effect here is; your dog starts to see you as a pack leader, why else would he let you handle him?
3. Educating your puppy to understand that it is absolutely fine if you touch his or her body parts will make it very easy if and when you have to administer medicine. For example, it will become an easier task for you to insert ear drops in his ears.
4. Another area and profession you are assisting in, is the Veterinarian industry. You will be prepping your puppy or dog to be handled by her or his Vet; some pet owners go to further lengths and actually simulate a Vets’ office environment by using a table and white gown (those are my kind of pet owners!)
When your puppy is done with the above mentioned bonding exercises, you should undertake some other exercises. There basically two categories of exercise, one is mental exercise and the other is physical exercise.
For many dogs, once exercised properly (mentally and physically) you will see a sudden change in behavior. For many, NOT all.
Physical exercise takes care of your dog’s heart rate. If you want to give your dog aerobic exercise then throw a ball and tell your dog to get it. This really helps them in stretching their legs.
You need a big room to play this game but if you don't have one you can easily compensate with tug games (If your dog is NOT aggressive, and even so, prior to a tug game a trainer should be consulted with). Physical exercise needs a bit of time and a lot of energy but, it really helps in keeping your dog fit.
Now the other exercise.... mental exercise, which is also very important for your dog. In this exercise you have to teach your dog some obedience commands.
Our Long Island Dog Training School trains our members’ dogs to respond to a variety of commands on and off-leash, not limited to: heel, sit, down, place (go to your doggie bed, and remain there until released, our favorite command), come (under distraction), leave-it, drop-it, etc…
Just like any human being, dogs also need exercise. Many pet owners subscribe to the notion that dogs need exercise first, discipline second, affection last. Although, this does have merit and preferably this is the ideal recipe for a balanced dog- just ask Caesar Milan ( I think he said something like that!) if you don’t believe us!
We understand that sometimes this is not possible with certain family structures, that’s why we like to tailor a program and suggest ideas to achieve results that are optimal to your family and dog.
When exercising your puppy it helps them to burn up energy that if unburned will probably lead to destructive or at the very least undesirable behavior. When dogs don't exercise they stay irritated. They don't pay attention to you and don't follow your commands; they just feel uncomfortable.
Exercise is just like a medicine. Every dog needs it in order to stay happy and fit. If we don’t provide the appropriate way to burn their natural energy then they will find a way.
A walk is mandatory for your dog. It not only helps them in burning energy but also maintains a strong bond between you and your dog.
Dogs simply love the person who takes them out for a walk or feeds them food. These tips will be really helpful in keeping your dog fit, healthy and strong.
